History

ACC is the acronym for the Crown entity, Accident Compensation Corporation.

Introduced in 1974 by the New Zealand Government, ACC is a state-provided scheme responsible for overseeing compensation to New Zealand citizens, residents, and visitors who have been involved in an accident either at work or elsewhere. ACC also educates the public on accident prevention through its campaigns.

Cover is provided by the ACC Scheme and this is what helps pay for the costs of recovery. The scheme covers payments towards treatment, help at home and work, and income support. Limitations to the support that ACC can provide are determined by Parliament.

The ACC Scheme is funded by levies payable by all New Zealanders via income taxes and things like motor vehicle licensing. Businesses and self-employed people pay a specific levy.
