The role of the New Zealand Holidays Act 2003

In New Zealand, different types of leave can be provided to employees, and these vary from employer to employer.

The New Zealand Holidays Act 2003 is foundational to NZ leave requirements and sets out the minimum provisions that all employees are entitled to. Any attempts to contract out of, or provide less than the Act, are not enforceable and should not be implemented. In addition, any leave type not covered by the Act should be covered by an employment agreement.

Where configuration is done

Different leave types have different requirements, but for most types of leave, configuration is generally required in all of our key systems:

  • Affinity Payroll (aka Affinity)

  • Affinity Self Service

  • ProServer

Because some config requires other config to be completed as a prerequisite, (i.e. you can’t configure Affinity Self Service until pay elements have been configured in Affinity), it's best that you complete the configuration in the order above to avoid missing something vital, so you don’t have to loop back.

OK, you may need to loop between pay elements and awards depending on the requirements, but configuration in those areas of the system should always be completed before you move on.

How to use this guide

This guide tells you how to work out what needs to be configured and where, and what to look out for when it comes to configuring NZ leave units. Depending on your needs, there are several places you can start.

  • If you know exactly where the config needs to happen, start with the Affinity config, move to the Affinity Self Service config, then do the ProServer config last.

  • If you're configuring a specific leave type, it might be easier for you to start your journey at a more specific entry point. Note that all leave-type config journeys start with the Affinity config, because that is the recommended starting point.
